Artist Bio

Isabella Comai (she /her) is a ceramic and mixed media artist living and working in the California Bay Area. Originally from Ann Arbor Michigan, Isabella grew up surrounded by pottery which led to a love of clay. After completing her Bachelor's degree in fine arts at Alfred University in 2022,  Isabella has continued to pursue her passion of creating ceramics and sculpture. Her work explores anxiety, depression, and the subconscious mind, through the use of human figures and fish.

Artist Statement

In “real life” I struggle with anxiety and depression. By creating art I enter an alternative reality where I can escape these thoughts and create my own narrative.

I find inspiration in water and all of the creatures that inhabit it. I try to capture that world in my ceramic sculptures, creating an imaginary landscape that is as surreal as it is beautiful.  I also feel a mindless relief from anxiety while embellishing my work. I often use other materials such as pearls to ornament the surfaces of my sculptures after firing and I use this process to distract myself from the everyday worries of life.

A pearl is formed in nature when a parasite makes its way into a shelled mollusk. The animal excretes calcium carbonate in the form of layers of nacre to protect itself. This eventually forms what we know as a pearl. By attaching small freshwater pearls to my work I am able to mindlessly accumulate my anxieties and soften them. In this way, I temporarily pause the parasitic worries that cloud my mind.
